Retro nine-patch quilt pattern - beginner friendly

Nine-patch quilts are one of the best quilt patterns to start with if you're a beginner quilter, or if you just want a quick weekend project to use up some fat quarters. This is a small lap quilt that measures 54" x 45".

I've listed out each of the fabrics and quantities I've used below, but feel free to change it up and use the fabrics that bring you joy.

FABRIC USED & YARDAGE

I used Kona solids for each of the quilt blocks.

CUT LIST - SINGLE PATCH SQUARE

You'll need (27) 3.5-inch squares from each of the fat quarters. An important note: you'll have very little scrap left over from these fat quarters, so take special care to make sure you trim off no more than 1/2 inch off the selvage end.

CUT LIST - BINDING

I used the KONA | CANTALOUPE fabric (Fabric "G") for my binding. You'll need (2) extra fat quarters for the binding strips. From these fat quarters, cut (10) 2-inch by WOF (width of fabric) strips.

CUT LIST - backing

If you're using fabric yardage to back your quilt, you'll need 3.5 yards (126 inches). Cut (2) 60-inch x WOF strips, then trim the selvages. Piece these strips together vertically to form a quilt back.

PATTERN IMAGE

Start laying out and sewing your blocks using this image as your guide. Each color combination will have (6) total nine-patch blocks. (3) of these will emphasize the darker color, and (3) will emphasize the lighter color.

GRID WITH SQUARE NAMES

If it's easier to use the labeled squares or you're using different fabrics, use the below grid to determine the layout for your quilt (fabrics labeled as A through J).
